Everything Counted as Loss

Philippians 3:8. Paul considers everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus his Lord, for whose sake he has lost all things.

He has just given his resume. Circumcised on the eighth day, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews, a Pharisee, zealous enough to persecute the church, faultless by the standard of the law. None of it was fake. Paul was the real thing, and he knew it. Then he puts it all on a balance sheet and marks it as loss. Not merely neutral, but debit, because for a long time it kept him from Christ.

The verse is not about despising good things. It is about comparison. Set beside the surpassing worth of knowing Christ, the rest of the column does not just shrink; it changes sign. On the last day of June, half the year gone, it is a fair moment to ask what is in your credit column, and whether any of it would survive being set next to him.
