Listen to Him
On the mountain, the Father says one thing about the Son, and it is a command
Mark 9:7NIV
Mark 9:7. A cloud covers the mountain, and out of it comes a voice. Peter has just offered to build three shelters, one each for Jesus, Moses and Elijah, as if the three belonged on the same shelf. The voice corrects him without arguing. This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him.
Notice what the Father does not say. He does not explain the glory, or describe the coming cross, or settle the questions the disciples will carry down the hill. He gives one instruction. Listen.
That is a word for a Friday at the start of a long weekend, when the mind is already elsewhere. Most of us would rather see something than hear something. The disciples saw more than anyone alive, and the Father still pointed them to Jesus' words. What Jesus says about suffering, service and the cross will matter more than what they saw that day.
Today the glory is hidden and the words are open on the table. Listening is still the whole assignment.
