Made for Man
Jesus' word about the Sabbath reorders the relationship between people and the rules meant to serve them.
Mark 2:27NIV
Mark 2:27. When the Pharisees complain that Jesus' disciples are picking grain on the Sabbath, Jesus answers, in the NIV's words, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath." Then he adds that the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.
It is Monday, and the week's rhythm is starting again. This verse is a good one to carry into it. God's commands are not arbitrary hurdles set up to test whether we will trip. They are gifts shaped to human need. The Sabbath exists because people need rest, and because rest is a way of trusting God to run the world for a day.
When rules become masters rather than servants, something has gone wrong, and Jesus names it. But the opposite error is just as real. To dismiss the gift because the Pharisees misused it is to lose the rest God intended. Somewhere between legalism and neglect is a day received gladly. Plan for it now, before Friday arrives.
