Rest for the Weary
Jesus offers rest to those worn down by work and worry, and asks only that they come.
In Matthew 11:28–30, Jesus says: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
A yoke is the wooden frame laid across the shoulders of an animal, or a pair of them, to pull a load together. It is an odd image for rest. We might expect the burden to be lifted off, not simply shared. But that is the promise here. The load does not vanish. It is carried differently, and not alone.
The invitation is wide. It is addressed to all who are weary, without condition and without a test to pass first. The only action asked is to come. For a reader at the end of a long day, that may be enough to hold on to: rest is offered, and the door is open.
Read the words slowly. Then, if you can, set the day down.
