To Live Is Christ
The best known sentence in Philippians is not a slogan but the conclusion of a man weighing his own death.

Philippians 1:21. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.
The sentence sits at the center of a paragraph where Paul is genuinely uncertain whether he will be released or executed. He does not pretend the question is easy. He says he is torn. Departing to be with Christ would be better by far, and yet staying means fruitful labor and more help for the churches. He decides, on balance, that he expects to remain, because they still need him.
What makes verse 21 remarkable is not that Paul is brave about death. It is that both options come out fine. If life is Christ, then more life is more Christ, and death is simply more of him still. The verse is a test as much as a comfort. Fill in the blank honestly. For me, to live is what? Whatever you write there is the thing whose loss would feel like losing everything. Paul's answer is the only one that makes dying gain rather than loss.
